Using the Lumify Hand-held Ultrasound Machine

Welcome to this short chapter on how to use the Lumify ultrasound. The Well On Their Way team will be there in person very shortly to go over all of this in person. But we thought it would be helpful for you to at least be somewhat familiar with its use in advance of our arrival.

This image shows where the Lumify probe is inserted into the tablet. It uses the same USBC port that a tablet charger uses. Because of this, the probe is not able to perform an exam while the tablet is being charged. So it is best to keep the tablet charged at all times to be sure it is ready when you need it.

This image is what you see when the Lumify app is first downloaded on the tablet. Your tablets will already have the Lumify app installed.

There are a few adjustments that can be made to the Lumify app, and those below indicated with the orange arrows are options that can be change. In general, it is best not to make these changes without instruction. You especially do not want to change the power setting, since increasing power can affect ob scan safety.

Step 1. Opening screen

When the opening screen comes up, you will see a circle with icons along the top. The icons represent the type of scan you want to perform. In your case, you will press the baby icon to select OB/GYN.

Step 2. Create a patient

Select the lower part of the circle to create a patient. Selecting this button will bring up the screen that allows you to enter the patient information.

Step 3. Identify the patient

This page shows the entries that you need to make to identify the scan.

You need to use a MRN (medial record number). This will be a unique patient identifier. We will instruct you how to create this number when we confirm the numbering system that the Ministry of Health wishes you to use.

Next you need to enter Last name, First name and then birthdate. Example, March 3, 1999 would be 3/3/1999.

It is also mandatory for you to put your name or initials in the section called “Performed by”. The referring physician can either be yourself or another provider.

The next section to complete is the Indication. This is the specific reason to perform the scan. Example: Pregnancy confirmation, location of IUD, fetal presentation etc).

The Study Description is the type of ob/gyn scan you are doing. This could be either GYN, first trimester, second/third trimester, or biophysical profile.

Step 4. Start the Exam

To start the exam, go to the upper right corner of the patient information page and select “Start Exam”

If you are in a hurry and fail to put in patient information, you can start an exam right away by pressing the blue section of the circle below. THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED. If you do this, the exam will be assigned an arbitrary number and it will be difficult to go back in and enter patient information later.

Once you are in active scanning, you will be able to enter an LMP. First select the square icon (indicated by the orange arrow below). It will then bring up a calendar that you can designate the patient’s LMP

You are now ready to scan!

When you perform the exam and find a good image of the structure you are looking for, you should press the blue icon on the green bar to “freeze” the image. This allows you to be able to measure and annotate the structure you are looking at.

After you freeze the image, you will then see the blue icon turn yellow. This will bring up icons to the left that allow you to select what you want to measure. You must tell the computer what you want to measure. Otherwise you will just get a numeric measurement.

You must save the image you just measured or captured in order for the computer to save it. Otherwise it will be lost and you will have to go back and re-capture the image.

To save (capture) the image, press the “camera” icon shown with the orange arrow. You will hear a “beep” confirming that your image has been saved.

Once you have taken your measurement, unfreeze the image by pressing the yellow icon.

If you wish to perform a M-mode (to capture fetal heartbeat) or to perform a color flow scan, you select the icons to the left of the green line when you are in active scanning mode (not frozen).

The orange arrow shows where the color flow selector is.

The blue arrow shows where you select M-mode.

The screen captures below do not have real images, but demonstrate what a measurement and assessment (upper left corner) looks like.

Note in the image above, the measurement line exceeded the limit of what BPD would normally measure, so the Fetal Age in the upper left corner states “NA” (not applicable)

If you want to see the ob report with all of your measurements, press the white arrow just below the baby icon on the green bar. This will pull up the report. It will look green and orange if you are still in active scanning mode.

When you are satisfied you have all the measurements, you can end the exam. To do this, locate and press “End Exam” (upper right corner)

Once you press End Exam, you will next see a window that asks if you are sure you want to end the exam, giving you one more chance to go back and make any additions or edits.

When you have completed the exam, you can go back and review the summary of the exam. You can also export the exam to a designated area. We will go over that in detail when we are there in person.

This is what you will see when you press Summary - it gives you a review of the obstetric measurements.

This is the location of where you go when you want to pull up the main menu in the app.

This is what you see when you select the menu (above). The orange arrow on the left allows you to pull up the list of all the saved exams in the machine. When you select this, then you will see the list (by patient name) and you can select that scan to either review it or export it.

To export an exam after it has been completed, you can select the exam you wish to export and press the “export all” option.

To go back and review the images in a particular exam, go to Saved Exams, and then select Review. This will allow you to see individual images that were captured in that exam.

Below is a pathway to export images to GUSI for the quality assurance review of scans. You will be given more detailed instructions when we are there in person.
