Course Overview

This course on basic obstetric ultrasound was created in conjunction with Well On their Way for training of midwives in the Gulu District, Uganda. This course is copyrighted and may not be reproduced or used for any other purpose without the written permission from the author.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, the midwife will:

  1. Understnd and apply ultrasound principles and fundamentals to Point-of-Care ultrasound (POCUS)

  2. Understand and apply practice scopes to determine what type of ultrasound is most appropriate to the patient’s condition

  3. Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology specific to POCUS used in OB/GYN

  4. Describe international standards of in the practice of POCUS in OB/GYN

  5. Utilize safety measures in performing ultrasound

  6. Accurately identify and image pertinent maternal and fetal structures

  7. Acquire and archive ultrasound images per standards

  8. Identify variation from normal for the purpose of making appropriate immediate clinical decisions:

    a. direct intervention

    b. consultation

    c. referral

  9. Provide accurate and timely documentation of findings and communicate effectively with other providers

  10. Demonstrate commitment to ongoing learning and competency in practice
