POCUS and IUD Evaluation

Course Overview

IUDs are one of the most common forms of long-acting contraception. IUDs play a very important role both for contraception and the treatment of benign gynecologic conditions. IUD malposition. However, it can have consequences, including possible decreased contraceptive efficacy and discontinuation. The purpose of this course is to help the practitioner learn methods for identifying common problems encountered during difficult IUD insertions, as well as how to detect an abnormal IUD position using point-of-care ultrasound. This course begins with some basic gyn ultasound technique for those who have little or no ultrasound background.

Course Objectives

By the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

 

Describe types of IUDs and their sonographic characteristics.

 

2. Describe rationale for use of ultrasound imaging for investigating IUD complications

 

3. Recognize signs of IUD complications

 

4. Describe ultrasound evaluation as follow-up for difficult IUD insertion

 

5. Identify sonographic images of both appropriately-placed IUD and malpositioned IUD

Target Audience

Physicians, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, midwives, and other providers of women’s health that utilize ultrasound.
