Women's Point-of-Care Ultrasound: Fetal Biometry and Growth

Course Overview

This course provides a description of determining fetal biometry, viability, and growth with the use of POCUS. The chapters cover how to obtain basic biometric measures, and the interpretation of these measures in assessing fetal age and potential growth abnormalities requiring additional monitoring or referral. Included in the first chapter is how to provide basic assessment of common fetal cardiac arrythmia, describing important referral and follow-up guidelines.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course the participant will be able to:

1.       List the indications for performing biometry

2.       Describe how to reconcile differences in dates/growth by LMP (last menstrual period) and size

3.        Describe the ultrasound modes appropriate for determining fetal cardiac rate in each trimester.

4.       Recognize landmarks used to align imaging angles for measurement of the fetal skull (BPD and HC), the fetal abdomen (AC), and the fetal femur (FL)

5.       Define and differentiate FGR (IUGR) and SGA

6.        Define and differentiate macrosomia and LGA

7.       Discuss labor management recommendations for both IUGR and macrosomic babies
